Coastal Cleanup Day in Alviso / north San Jose

Greetings Friend of the Environment

This year's annual Coastal Cleanup Day is coming up fast!

Saturday September 18, 2021 9am-noon

The South Bay Yacht Club of north San Jose / Alviso California needs your help with habitat restoration on the Alviso Slough.

We will be hauling out semi-abandoned wooden docks built in the 1960s. Much of the old docks are rotten, most are floating on slowly disintegrating Styrofoam, and everything needs to be removed to restore Alviso marshlands to natural conditions.

  • Who: All volunteers with strong backs and a willingness to help with habitat restoration.
    • Sorry, no youth under 12 years old in the demolition zone.
    • BUT -- under 12 are welcome to hang out.
    • 12-18 OK in demolition area if supervised by a parent or legal guardian.
    • All adults must sign waivers, youth must have waiver signed by parent or legal guardian.
  • What: Haul out old abandoned docks, stack everything into dumpsters.
    •  Followed by BBQ lunch for all volunteers.
  • When: Coastal Cleanup Day, Saturday September 18, 2021 9am-noon
  • Where: South Bay Yacht Club, 1491 Hope Street, San Jose (Alviso)
  • Parking: Free and plentiful on Hope Street and Catherine Street.
  • Why: The wildlife of Alviso need clean new homes. Removing of decades-old semi-abandoned docks will be the next step in ongoing South Bay habitat restoration.
What Else?
  • WEAR STURDY WORK BOOTS that you don't mind getting muddy.
  • Bring construction gloves if you have them, some will be available, but bring your own if you have them.
  • All other tools will be provided.
  • All appropriate CDC and county COVID-19 restrictions apply.
  • And yup, bring an appetite! We'll be serving BBQ to all volunteers after the cleanup.

Please spread the word! We need at least 50 volunteers to haul abandoned materials out. So the more, the merrier.

PLEASE RSVP BELOW! I will add you to the volunteer's list and will send more info as Sept 18 approaches.

We hope to see you at the cleanup.
