Botball Robotics Team

Seeking Sponsorship for their trip to the International Botball Championship

Washington D.C. July 1 – July 7, 2009

Greetings

The New York Xavier High School Botball Robotics team the "Xavier Knights" swept the New York Botball robotics championship in Polytechnic University / Brooklyn / May 16, 2009, and has been invited to compete in the International Botball Championship in Washington D.C. on July 1 – July 7, 2009.  The Xavier High School is raising $3000 to cover travel expenses to this once-in-a-lifetime chance to compete in this famous International competition. Sponsors have come forwarded but funds are still needed to send the 6 students and 1 adults to the East coast.

Since 2005 the "Xavier Knights" have been a powerhouse and every year are the team to beat in the region.  Team members attend top schools like Cornell, Columbia, RIT, Syracuse, MIT, etc

Botball is unique in that all robots are fully autonomous.  Unlike other robotics competitions that rely on remote control to adjust the robot's tactics, Botball robots execute a pre-programmed strategy designed by the student teams.  Once the competition begins, no human input is allowed.  20 teams competed and 250 cheered in the March 2009 New York Botball Championship, including well funded teams from several better funded school districts in & around New York.

The team is comprised of the top students in the robotics class--a technology elective offered only to seniors. Bobby Thompson, a senior at Xavier who was accepted into the engineering program at RIT, has been looking forward to competing on the team since he was a freshman. "Every year I've seen the trophies that the robotics team has won and I couldn't wait for my turn. To have a chance to be creative, work with my hands, and see my work in action is a big thrill. I will definitely pursue this as a career."

Prizes won by the Xavier Knights include:

1) Overall First Place.  For the third time in five years, under the direction of Mr. Michael Chiafulio, the Xavier Robotics Team won first place overall in the NY/NJ Regional Autonomous Robotics Tournament.

2) Xavier took home second place in the seeding round, first place in the head to head round, a judge's choice award for the most innovative strategy, and first place overall.

3) The team also received a trophy for their second place finish in the national research and design website challenge.

The Xavier Knights research and design site won 2nd place in the National Botball Research and Design Challenge and first place in the channel 13 Chase Multimedia in the Classroom Awards. http://faculty.xavierhs.org/chiafuliom/secondsight/
The Xavier High School is invited to compete in the national championship, and are asking for donations from all sources to sponsor these local champs’ life-altering chance to compete in the International Botball Championship competition.   Please see the website for more information:
